I have eaten every meal on this trip alone. And it has been one of the most nourishing parts of the journey.

I have eaten every meal on this trip alone. Breakfast at a hotel in Prague before the city woke up. Lunch at a café in Salzburg watching strangers pass by. Dinner outside central Vienna watching horse drawn carriages go by with nothing but my thoughts and a good meal in front of me.

And it has been one of the most nourishing parts of this trip.

I have met many people who find solo dining uncomfortable. There is something about sitting at a table alone in a restaurant that can feel exposing. Like everyone is looking. Like you should have someone to talk to. Like being alone means something is wrong.

It does not.

The ability to sit with yourself in a public space without distraction is one of the quieter markers of emotional regulation. Most people never practice it.

What the Research Shows

Studies have shown that people actually enjoy their food more when eating alone because they focus fully on the sensory experience of the meal itself rather than managing the social dynamics around the table. When there is no conversation to navigate, no one else's experience to consider, the food tastes better. You notice it more. You are actually there.

Research on mindful eating consistently shows that presence at the table — real presence, not distracted scrolling — improves digestion, increases satisfaction, and reduces overeating. The table for one is not a lesser experience. For many people it is the first time they have ever actually tasted their food.

There is also the question of what happens in the silence. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology found that solo diners report higher levels of mindfulness during meals. The mind, without social performance to manage, turns inward. And that is where the real nourishment happens.

Sitting alone in a restaurant in a foreign city is not loneliness. It is presence. And presence is one of the rarest things we give ourselves.

What solo dining actually means is that you are present. Fully. Just you and the meal and whatever is moving through you that day.

Some of my most important reflections on this trip happened over a bowl of Czech goulash. A green creamed spinach soup. And a slice of pizza in Vienna that ABBA led me to.
