The
Decision

I was booked for Budapest. And then the night before I left, I just knew.

The original plan made complete sense. Budapest. Watch Gavyn perform. Take the train to Vienna. Clean, logical, done.

I had thought it through from every angle. I had even made peace with not being at his first performance in Prague. He needed to experience this on his own. To navigate a foreign country with his group. To grow into the young man this trip was going to ask him to be.

I believed all of that. I still do.

And then the night before I was supposed to leave, something shifted.

Not a thought. A feeling. A knowing in my body that I was not going to miss his first international performance. That I needed to be in that room. That whatever it cost, I was going to get there.

So I changed everything. At the last minute. From an airport gate.

What followed was eighteen hours of chaos. A booking error. A language barrier. A Ryanair mistake I will not be repeating. Desk after desk at a foreign airport sending me somewhere else. Gate changes. Delays. A flight I was not supposed to be able to book same day.

My Lufthansa journey that day went like this. SFO to Frankfurt. Frankfurt to Budapest. Budapest to Munich. Munich to Prague. Four flights. Eighteen hours. Delays and gate changes in between.

And then a young gentleman at the OTP desk who was kind enough to actually listen. Who figured out a way to make it work and got me on the last flight out. There is always one person. In every chaotic situation there is one person who will help. Find them. Thank them. Remember them.

I checked in to Hotel Paris Prague after midnight. There was an old fashioned key at the front desk. A cemetery playing on the television. Prague welcoming me in its own way.

I laughed. I had made it.

The next morning I walked outside and there it was. Smetana Hall. The concert venue where Gavyn would perform that evening. Directly across the street from my hotel window.

I had booked that hotel in a rush, at a gate, stressed and running out of time. I had not known what it was or where it sat. I had just needed somewhere in Prague and I had booked it fast.

And it was directly across the street from where my son would take the stage for his first international performance.

Worth Noting

Sometimes the decision that costs the most chaos in the short term is the one your body has been trying to make for weeks.

The felt sense — that quiet knowing before the logic catches up — is not impulsiveness. It is intelligence. Learning to trust it is some of the most important work we can do.

This is The Long Way There. What happens when you stop managing the journey and start living it.

Befriending your fear is where healing begins.

These stories are proof of that. Not theory. Not framework. Just the road, and what it asked of me.
