Nine Years in a Cave,
One Hour on a Mountain

A climb through the ancient mountains of Zhengzhou, a cave that held nine years of devotion, and the slow realization that nothing here is a coincidence.

Over the past couple of years, I have gone further into my mindfulness and meditation practice, and it leads me to an even deeper self-discovery.

The temples, the philosophy, the teachings. I have only known them through books, through hours of scrolling, through podcasts in my ears on long drives. I am always trying to understand more. Every book opens a door to another one.

I never expect that a Kung Fu training trip to China, with my family and our Kung Fu school, will turn into something that changes me spiritually.

I find myself sitting inside a small cave where the Buddha meditated for years. Standing in one of the oldest Buddhist temples. Sharing meals, ceremonies, and meditation with the monks. It feels like the universe arranged all of it, leading me to the exact places I need to move forward on my spiritual path.

The Climb

My Shaolin journey begins with a strenuous hike in the ancient mountains of Zhengzhou, China. My boys and I, well, maybe just me, face a real test of physical and mental endurance. This is no ordinary hill. It is steep terrain with sliding rocks, uneven steps, and sharp gravel. A near impossible climb.

Throughout the trip, our Sifu, our Kung Fu teacher, shares many of his personal stories. He tells us about the endless hours he spent on this exact mountain during his training as a young warrior. The ascent had to be completed within thirty minutes, or they would start again. He describes his knees covered in blood, the skin peeling from the sharp gravel, as he fought to make the time. I cannot imagine that pain without my heart breaking. I am in awe of his resilience.

I run every day. I am strong and healthy for my age. It still takes me over an hour to reach the top. My boys are far ahead, waiting for me when I finally get there. If the thirty minute rule were still in place, I would not have made it.

At the top stands a massive gold and white Buddha. I look out and see green hills rolling for miles. I can see the exact spot where the trail began, all the way down below. I feel like I am on top of the world.

But it does not end there.

The Path Was Already Waiting

On the way up sits the ancient Bodhidharma Cave. This place holds centuries of spiritual history and stands as a beacon for introspection. Legend says that Bodhidharma, a revered figure in Zen Buddhism, meditated in this cave for nine years.

Pilgrims and practitioners are drawn here as a place of inspiration. The cave holds the essence of Buddhist practice. Introspection, mindfulness, and the quest for understanding. The story of Bodhidharma reinforces something I keep returning to. True wisdom arises from within. Through contemplation, we reach insights that quietly change how we see ourselves and the world that connects us all.

Nine years in stillness. My one honest hour on the mountain. I do not need to match his devotion to learn from it. The climb is never really about the speed. It is about showing up, again and again, for the part of yourself that is still becoming.

These are not chance encounters. They are synchronicities, aligned on my path. And recognizing that fills my heart with gratitude.

The path was already waiting. I just had to be ready to walk it.

Some lessons do not arrive by chance. They arrive when you are finally able to receive them.
